Re: WTB: Mesa Boogie Rectifier Multi Watt

People have finally figured out that the MWs are really good. Prices lately have been in the $1300-1500 range for good used ones. I may have a MW Triple for sale, haven't decided yet. Either that or my 2 channel blackface triple will get sold.

The IIB+ and the IIC+ are very close in dynamics & tone. The C is better & I agree you should experience it, but if at all possible I recommend you have them all on hand first and then only keep your favorite.

Re: Mark IIb mod's, return on investment (i.e. second-hand going rate?)

For performance no one is going to know the difference. If you need three gigging channels and you want vintage, have your III modded to III+ with R2 volume. Works great. If you don't need vintage get a Mark V or JP or (my choice) DR MW for gigging & leave the babies at home! I sold my Boogie 5 band...

Re: Mark IIb mod's, return on investment (i.e. second-hand going rate?)

My first Mark II was a IIC HRG. The cleans were PHENOMENAL. I had Mike upgrade it to a C+ because C+. Of course the leads got better, but the cleans lost something. In hindsight I wish I would have left it stock. The IIB loop mod WILL axe the amazing cleans (just like the C++ mod does)- but it reall...

...also I agree that the mods won't really add value. I've bought & more importantly sold a lot. Most people don't even want to pay for a Mike B. service in a used price (which I disagree with).

Re: Mark IIb mod's, return on investment (i.e. second-hand going rate?)

That's my vid if you have any questions. I think my IIB+ has a little more gain than a stock IIC+. With a boost it has the gain of my old C++. The lead tone isn't as liquid as a C+, but even though the C+ technically has better tone I actually prefer the IIB rhythm tone BECAUSE it has a better botto...

Well, Mark IVs Vs and Rectifiers all have the feature stock so I'd guess no.

The Mark III has the big pull deep effect like the Mark II does. The controls are really almost identical, just the voicing & feel are different.

Re: Want more liquidy-ness. Should I mod my red stripe III DRG or get a studio preamp?

The III+ mod is awesome, and cleans up the tone on the III a lot, but it's still not a IIC+ in terms of liquidity. The closest I've come to a IIC+ is a loop modded late IIB. The rhythm is real close, but the lead still isn't quite as liquid. Look, if you want to experience C+ tone, you just have to ...

Here's my IIC++ DRG vs HRG.

Also when the HRG was a mere +.

The D is smoother. I have to say though, for TIGHT & FAST, the S kicked the D & H's ass.

Re: Metal on a Mark IIB

The IIB will give much metal, especially the later ones. The 60W is pentode & very tight / fast. Here's my IIB loop mod Coli vs. IIC+ 60w. The loop mod does goose it a bit, but considering where you live I'd just boost it as needed. For metal you'll also want a full set of Mesa JJ preamp tubes and a...

Re: Fully loaded Mark III Colisuem price?

I agree with Markedman's prices. I'd pay at most $1500 for a purple or blue. A bit more for a black or red. The buyer needs to add in about $400 worth of Mike B. service & if he's smart another $200 for the III+ mod. So, he'd be in it $2100 plus any new tubes & shipping.

Re: Will any EL34/6L6's work in my Mark III?

I've tested most 6L6 Mesa colors but no EL34s as I don't tend to use them. They are not a direct cross in terms of color / output. Technically all Mesa colors are "supposed" to work, but pragmatically if you're paying attention going hotter or colder will change the tone & the tube life. I tonally p...
