Re: red hot el84s DC3

You probably lost a grid resistor. Get thee to a repair guy..... BTW - these amps benefit from the mod that lowers the bias of the power tubes. My tech did it and the tubes now run much cooler. Al Bias mod works fine - I took my dual cal from -10.8 to -14, doesn't eat valves now and sounds just as ...

Re: Extension Cabs for Express 5:50 PLUS

When I bought my 5:50 plus direct from Mesa Hollywood back in 2014, I asked up front "What would you recommend as the 2 X12 cab best suited to the 5:50 head. The rep I worked with (Mark) suggested the 2X12 Horizontal Rectifier cabinet. It's got a closed back with Celestion Vintage 30s. I've been ve...

Re: resurrecting a DC3 (a.k.a. C.S.I. Dc3)

Pilotltd, when you say “standard” you mean the standard values for specifically these early Dc3s or the standard for all Dc3s in general ? I once read a great debate here in the forum about biasing an early DC3 but could not find it anymore. It must be in some other topic. Bendo, thanks for pro...

Re: resurrecting a DC3 (a.k.a. C.S.I. Dc3)

Bias at -11v with a plate voltage of 400v is standard. Look for posts on bias mod.

Re: 5:50+ - wildly different volumes in each voice?

Relatively new 5:50+ owner here, and I am finding blues and crunch at similar volumes, burn way higher and clean way lower - makes channel switching almost hazardous. Anyone else the same? Am I doing something wrong? (Otherwise incredibly pleased with the tones!!) thx in advance Yes, that's normal ...

Re: need info for DC-2

Weight 44 like quoted. They are hot but easy to reduce bias voltage . Only needs one resistor piggy backing on another. Details are in mods post in this forum. Doesn't ruin tone either, BTW they are loud :)

Re: Who has a cab clone and likes it?

I've just bought one. The only problem I have with it is the low output volume on the headphone socket. May well be the impedance of the phones I'm using but none of the ones I have work well unless I crank the masters on the amp higher than what I'd normally use gigging.

Re: What cabs...

I have 2 basic EQ settings...one for me, alone in the amp cave and the other for the band. The two are pretty different to my ears and is why I try not to set the final EQ after I change up the pedalboard. Adjusting the tone on the ODs is where I get the mix cut and it varies with the venue. Doing ...

Re: 5:50 Express + - Cab or Combo?

+1 on the head/cab. I have a 2x12 Avatar vintage cab that is awesome paired with the 5:50+ head. It is loaded with a Vintage 30 and a G12H30. 2x12 cab with a Vintage 30 and a G12T75 with my 5:50+ head is my favourite, I've also a 1x12 cab with a Vintage 30. Both cabs are closed back almost. The 1x1...

Re: Express plus 5:50 or Mark V:25?

I am currently saving for what was definately going to be The Express. Now that this new Mark is out for the same price I am having a hard time deciding. I play all kinds of music and need a very versatile amp crystal cleans and pretty extreme O.D. . preferably without pedals . This being my first ...

Re: DC5 Reverb low?

I was just playing my DC3 (I think the preamp and reverb are the same) last night and it has WAY more reverb than I can use on the clean channel. I have it set to 3. My DC2 is same now - plenty reverb. Dunno bout DC5 but certainly on 2's and 3's V5 tube's gain has a big effect on reverb level and m...

Re: DC-2 problem

Success!! It lives! Both Zeners in the low voltage supply were broken, in different ways! One would allow any voltage through, the other was open circuit. One 1N4007 was way off and allowing some voltage back. I've changed all 7 of them in the power supply. One of the 220uF caps was way off too - on...

Re: Mark IV buying advice

Guys, The OP said that it may have been serviced within the last 2 years, but it was not a sure thing that it had been. And, I went back and re-read the OP. I did read it incorrectly on one thing. I thought it said that the amp had been put away and had not been played at all in 6 years. I missed t...

Re: DC-2 problem

Thanks to Orion_99 for the pointer - there is something weird going on in the low voltage section. Should be -15V to pins 3 & 5 of the 5532 - there isn't - It's 0. Between the zeners it's 0 too. Hope it's just a shorted zener, but I've a nasty feeling that the 220uF 35V cap may be shot. That means r...
