Re: Express Plus 5:50 output transformer size

I think the mesa transformers are fine at least up to the 50w range.. I replaced a perfectly good OT on my Express 5:50 with a Mercury Trafo and frankly couldn't hear a significant difference... except during the "play in" when things got pretty psychedilic... Have heard that mesa trafos "might" be ...

Re: Express 5:50 Plus concerns

I got rid of all my combos... use nothing but heads and cabs. that eliminates a lot of issues and makes testing different speakers easier.

Re: 5:50+ new owner and the dreaded hisssssss again

just a note about the mesa Express 5:50... in the first series, the clean setting (first channel) was noisier and the crunch setting was cleaner... mesa "corrected" that with the + Series, and the "clean" setting was cleaned up, whereas the "crunch" setting got a little more noise, where it would no...

Re: Express 5:50+ vs 5:50

I got the "dark" thing under control now.. and I realized why ceramic speakers can be a good thing even at low volumes.

I am now using mixed ceramic and alnico in all my cabs and low-watt speakers all around - i get a balanced, juicy sound out of all my cabinets with excellent sustain qualities.

Re: Electra Dyne Transformer Size

I remember mine looked pretty damn big, too. That thing weiged a ton. Never did figure out the electradyne... I wanted to try EL-34 tubes but was not impressed with the amp, sold it for what I paid for it and was glad to get rid of it. Exp 5:50 with Mercury output trafo (super amp) Exp 5:550+ also v...

Re: Just got my first Mesa, a 5:25. What do I need to know?

I have two express series amps (550 and 550+) The Class A 5w mode is where it's at. That is single-ended triode mode. This is how guitar amps are supposed to sound Now, assuming you have a good guitar, all you need to do is make sure you're playing through good speakers. Speakers make up half your s...

Re: 5:25 plus vs 5:50 plus

Only reason I would own a complex, multi-channel amp like the Mark series is to run two 6L6 in class A TRIODE mode. and for that, I would prefer a simulclass mark III - the IIc+s are ridiculously expensive. those amps with all those bells and whistles? Needlessly complex and expensive. I own two Exp...

Re: Studio 22

The VS-12 is an Eminence and IMHO sounds like crap. The studio .22 is a LOW WATT AMP. Don't pair it with high-watt speakers, you are just pushing the amp real hard to get a decent sustain. Give it good low-watt speakers (max 30 to 40 watts, 30 would probably be best) and I highly recommend Tone Tubb...

Re: Studio 22

I got rid of my eminence Black Shadow (it was a VS-12) the celestions are better. I still wouldn't use a stiff C-90 in a 22w amp. That speaker has a power capacity of 90w - it will be loafing at 22. You would have to crank the thing to get any sustain out of it. People completely underestimate how i...

Re: Studio 22

If you need more sustain, check your speakers!!!! I can't say this enough. Mass-produced amps (including mesas) always come with ceramic speakers, and mesas in particular are relatively stiff, designed to be cranked to deafness-inducing volume levels. If you want sustain at a volume you can LISTEN t...

Re: Studio 22

Mesa told me they didn't track individual serial numbers before the 90's - but my question to them in that case was in reference to Mark III. My Studio .22 also has the "class A" thing written on it. Class A is kind of a relative thing, though.. most people these days don't operate their amps very "...

Re: Who else is planning on swapping tubes?

maybe you need to look at some other components of the signal chain. What speaker(s) are you playing through, for instance? What type of guitar? I have been playing mesas for decades and never encountered one yet that sounded "brittle" or "sterile" in my opinion... but after all, this is a HIGHLY SU...
