$100 says you waste a TON of time and money trying to make the V into what you are hearing in your head only to find out it just isn't that. You already know the basic tone of each mode in the amp. If none of that fits the sound in your head then you need a different amp. I wouldn't waste $ on...
I keep hearing people say that the MK1 mode sounds like it has a blanket over the cab. Other then the obvious bass down/presence & treble up, try it with single coils - sounds awesome. It is my favorite mode on the whole amp. A volume role off gives some nice tones for chording as well.
I fall squarely into this group. I got the V because of the versatility and the ability to have good tube tones at low volume. I love CH1 & 2 but have always struggled to find tones I like on CH3. I have always found CH3 to be a bit harsh, tinny and overall thin. For chunky palm mutting metal...
Mark 1 thickness at normal. I keep the bass almost off and add it in with the GEQ. That mode is by far the best on the amp for playing heavy rhythm. It is so thick and chunky. I find that because this mode is so ridiculously thick the key to it is to run the treble and presence fairly high.
Am I the only one here who finds that odd? Sounds like his gain is set at 8-9 o'clock. I sure don't get any breakup on my clean channel in that range.
If you are using the CLEAN setting you really shouldn't be getting much in the way of breakup. If you are in FAT especially with the BOLD...
I'll also more or less echo what everyone has already said. Try this 10w, Variac and CH vol around 11-12 and the master output all the way off, strike a chord then turn the master output slowly until you get some sound. You can get some really nice tones at bedroom volume.
Edge is one of my favorite modes. I don't like it with higher output pups or the GEQ on though. It is awesome for chording with vintage wound pups and the bass on the preamp up to at least noonish.
I can never understand why people like the V30 with the V. The V is a very mid rangy amp and the V30 is a speaker with pronounced mids. It is just too much to my ears. When I got my V I took the 30's out of my cab after a week. If you are playing mainly blues you may want to look at a darker...
I ditched my OD when I got the V. The V is so tight and has a ton of gain as it is. When I ran a TS up front it more or less just ruined my tone. I found the only thing it was useful for was getting some grit on CH1 clean but the tweed mode sounded better so I sold it.
Try some El34b's, they still have most of the low end you find in 6L6's but also have the mid range bite. They really make CH2 come alive. I have the Tung Sol EL34b's and I love them.
No idea but as a word to the wise you should always have a spare set of tubes lying around for troubleshooting purposes. Snag a set of power tubes and at least 2 preamp tubes. 90% of the problems tube amps face are tube related.
I would be happy with that if it were me, that is excellent service. It looks like MB is doing everything they can to make it right for you. Sometimes things just go wrong but if the company does everything in their power to make it better then that is all we can really ask. Glad it's getting...
