I finally cured the piercing brightness on Channel 2 ....

Thanks for some very interesting mods, I have to ask this: as you have both amps, can you duplicate the xtc blue channel on the Ace? if so what settings (er pre mod if possible)

Finally found cure for Ace combo excessive brightness

Agreed, both tubes and speaker are definitely the biggest part of the equation. I tried an EV Thiel cab with the Ace but I preferred the V30 for some reason. I guess what I am describing is a way to tame the "squawk" from the V30 in the combo.

Finally found cure for Ace combo excessive brightness

    >>you need 1 1/2 - 2 feet, solder on 1/4" one end put tags the other by this I mean the length of the speaker cable on the ace combo is 2 feet long one end of the cable has a 1/4" right angle switchcraft plug soldered to it, the other end is soldered to the speaker. I soldered tags on that end...

Finally found cure for Ace combo excessive brightness

Evidence Audio Siren II Speaker cable Amazing difference, strong bass the wierd harsh highs are gone. it costs $5.90 a foot in bulk from lavacable.com, or you can buy cables premade. For combo you need 2 feet of cable, solder a 1/4" right angle plug on one end and speaker tags on the other...

    Mark V tidbits

I dont own a mark II but when switching from the mark IV channel to the mark II channel the difference was the mark II channel was brighter and the gain was less saturated. I cant comment on feel as I probably spent 25 seconds on each channel and was using a guitar off the wall etc.

    Mark V tidbits

iirc the reason they did not make the voicing footswitchable on the stiletto was it changed the sound for the worse (those ldr's maybe?) I agree there are large gain jumps when switching voices that would make it unusable, er unless you wanted such not same topic but I think they also said...

tite-gain or maybe crunch gain on 9. I think some of the difference may be 6L6 instead of EL34, the shrillness of the stiletto was not there, which I liked.

    Mark V tidbits

the fat clean and the crunch voicings are new to the mark series, and very useful imho. the crunch channel sounded sounded like my Stiletto or maybe better, definitely beefier than R2 on my Mark IV. but I only played it for 10 mins so I might be wrong
